Chanukah Menorah
Chanukah menorah is one of the best known symbols in Judaism. In Chanukah (also spelled Hanukkah or Hanukah), we kindle the light of a nine-candle Menorah to commemorate the victory of the Jewish army over the great Greek empire that ruled over the land of Israel two thousands years ago. This lovely ritual of lighting the Chanukah Menorah celebrates the rededication of the Second temple of Jerusalem by the Maccabees. In the Jewish tradition, the Chanukah Menorah has become a symbol of victory and religious freedom. Chanukah, also known as the festival of lights, is observed by the kindling of the lights of the special menorah for eight successive days. Chanukah menorah is called in Hebrew Channukyah. Why do we kindle the Chanukah menorah? King Antiochus, ruler of the Greek Empire, occupied the the land of Israel More than 2000 years ago. King Antiochus commanded all Jews who lived in his territories to abandon their faith and worship the Greek gods instead. King Antiochus and his soldiers took control over the second temple. They ruined all Jewish signs, filled it with images of Greek gods and forced Jews to worship them. Those who refused were killed or tortured. A small group of determined Jewish soldiers gathered under the leadership of the Macaabees. Refusing to surrender, the Maccabees fought with all their might. A few years of bloody battles finally ended with a great victory over the undefeatable Greek army. This amazing victory is the first miracle of Chanukah. After defeating the Greeks, the Maccabbees rededicated the sacred temple and removed all the Greek statues. Then, the Maccabbees wanted to light the holy Menorah in the temple, also known as the Eternal Light. The eternal light was believed to shine forever .But to the Maccabbee's dismay, there was only a small jug of oil left for the holy lamp in the temple, which was only enough for one day. To everyone's surprise, the small jug of oil kept the Menorah lit for eight whole days. That was the second miracle of Chanukah. To commemorate these miracles of Chanukah, we light the Chanukah menorah during the eight days of the holiday. Lighting the Chanukah has become an ancient Jewish custom that celebrates religious freedom.
